I found another entry for Van Marshall Dempsey at www.familysearch.org . It is a marriage record listed as Marshall V Dempsey. The bride is CAROLINE LESTER Marriage: 30 JUL 1857 , Cape Girardeau, Missouri

I think this must be his first wife. Hopefully we now have a last name for wife #1.
