Melissa Eaches and Andrew S. Dempsey

Hi Everybody!

I'm trying to track down more about my 2nd great grandaunt Melissa Eachus. She was the daughter of Rufus Eachus and his first wife, and born February 9, 1834 most likely in Gallia County, Ohio.

She supposedly married Andrew S. Dempsey in Lawrence County, Ohio on Dec. 28, 1859, but there is no record of them marrying in Lawrence County. There are three marriages for an Andrew Dempsey in Lawrence County

Susan Piles, Jan. 7, 1849
Anna M. Wiseman Sept. 2, 1855
Sarah A. Kemp Feb. 10, 1857.

I saw on one website that Sarah Kemp was married to the son of Andrew and his first wife (Susan?)

I also checked Gallia County, Ohio, since that's where this Eaches family originally settled in Ohio, no hits for marriages. Apparently it was common for families to cross the river and marry in Greenup or Boyd Co., KY , where there was no waiting period.

Has anyone actually pursued where Melissa was married? I have children for them as:

unnamed infant (1/12th yr 1860 census-before 1870 census)
Joseph (1865-1946)
Hugh (1866-1918)
Eliza A (1867-1958)
Minnie (1872-1939)

I've seen it suggested that they had an Eliza A and an Annie, but unless someone can show me they were two seperate children I believe they're the same. Note in the 1870 census there's an Eliza A, but she doesn't show up in the 1880, on the other hand in the 1880 there is an Annie, but she doesn't show up in the 1870 (granted she's only 10 and may not have shown up because she wasn't born. But...

There is a book entitled History of Lawrence County, Ohio, 1990, in which there is a biography of Andrew J. Dempsey by a JoAnne Ramsey... gives the same four children. She is where I got my dates for the children, though the dates closely follow the census.

Any help that you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I will gladly share my research on the Eachus family.

Linda Trent
