The following entries for the 1850 Logan Co., VA census should provide some more clarity:

Joseph* Dempsey 10 M VA 14 Sep 1850

Previously I thought this Joseph Dempsey age 10 was a duplicate of Joseph Baisden age 15 living with the family of Joseph & Lucinda (Osborne) Baisden. I WAS WRONG. Instead, the following research supports that this Joseph Dempsey is a duplicate of Joseph Dempsey age 10, son of Andrew & Martha (Starr) Dempsey. However, I was correct when I said Joseph was living with his uncle James Starr because James Starr was the brother of Joseph’s mother Martha Starr, who married this Joseph’s father Andrew Starr. This conclusion is based on the following data:

1860 Logan Co., VA (WV) census

#709 Dempsey, Joseph A 20 VA
       Emanda 27 VA (sister) b. 1833 (d/o Andrew)

This Amanda b. 1833 was the daughter of Andrew; therefore, Amanda’s brother Joseph was also the son of Andrew.

A near neighbor was Joseph’s uncle James Starr who appears on the census as follows:

#708 Starr, James 60 VA
       Rebecca 43 VA

1870 Logan Co., VA (WV) census

#98 Dempsey, Andrew 62 (see census)

#100 Starr, James 60 (see census)

#101 Dempsey, Joseph 30 VA
       Rebecca (Deskins) VA 24

1880 Logan Co., VA

#370? Dempsey, Joseph A. 40
       Rebecca 28 wife
       Joseph age? Son

Also the following information pertains to Mark's son Joseph Baisden Dempsey b. 1835:

       Lucinda A. 28
       Joseph 24
       John W Dun 18
       Cintha 18
       Andrew 18
       Lewis 7
       Sarah J. 6

1867 Joseph B. Dempsey to Nancy E. Calaway, Vol 5, PG 125

1870 Lawrence Co., KY census:
