Did a little offshoot tree research today. "Devil Anse" Hatfield was easy enough since Abner Vance Sr is my fourth great grandfather as is also John Dempsey husband to Rachael. Jack "Mingo Co Mauler" Dempsey is my third cousin twice removed. While the Hatfields and McCoys were fuedin' my line of Vances and the Dempseys were close in SW West Virginia. Cynthia Dempsey married Washington Anderson Vance and they are my g g grandparents. Their son Joseph D married Emily Jane Harris(my daddy's granny Vance) My daddy passed in 2005 at the age of 87. Years before he passed he claimed that Jack was born in Mingo Co. Not only that, but that Granny Vance nursed both Jack and my grandfather Jefferson Davis Vance. I know, I know must be one of those family legends word of mouth sort of thing. Did a little research years ago before the internet and decided my daddy must be a bit wet, since it was easy enough to find that Jack was born in Colorado. Stopped there, figuring that they were pioneer Dempseys and no idea that the family was from WV. Now that I can see the tree (have only been doing this for a few weeks) I see how our familys are connected with their West Virginian heritage. The LDS files, which I have learned to take with a grain, has William Harrison "Jack" Dempsey "Christened" in Colorado in 1903, eight years after his birth. Wonder why such a time lag? Considering the nomadic lifestyle of Hyrum, could it be possible that the great fighter was truly a West Virginian? Any guidance from the Dempsey family and historians is appreciated.
