Jack was not in the service in WW1. After the war veterans were upset about this. A rumor started thatr his name was really Dempshki or something similar and that he was a communist.
The truth is:
Dempsey during the war raised $2 million for the relief of soldiers families.
He was really a Dempsey
He was tried for draft evasion but found completely innocent.
He enlisted in the service in WW2
