The Dempseys controlled about 100 square miles of territory. They were viscounts under the British. I know of at least 8 castles they owned. Their territory was on the river Barrow, where Offaly, Leix and Kildare meet. I,ve visited most of the castles. My favorite is Castle Lea near Portarlington. I have a 40 page history of the Dempseys written in 1905 by Lord Walter Fitzgerald that is fantastic. He was proud of his Dempsey roots. I got the writeup from the National Library in Dublin.
