My name is also Jim Dempsey, and I was born in Scranton but only lived there for a couple of years. My dad and his family lived in Scranton for many years. I am also doing some genealogy work and here is brief summary:
my father's name: James K. Dempsey; grew up in Dunmore
my grandfather's name: Michael J. Dempsey; lived in Scranton, Dunmore (Quincy St) and finally in Elmhurst
my great-grandfather's name: James F. Dempsey; born in Ireland, came to the US in 1860 or 1870; lived in Dunmore
my great-great grandfather's name: Darby Dempsey; don't know much about him
I know there is one other Dempsey family in Scranton for sure. These folks own a number of dry-cleaning stores and have been referred to me as the "Laundry Dempsey's". I don't know if they are related to my family, likely only distantly.
I have more info if you think there is a connection.
