THank you Barbara for your reply. I am in the process of working with my Father, William Polk ( grandson of Mary Harding and James Polk and author of Polk's Folly), elaborating her diary - written in old age with many gaps.I have been searching for images and have assembled a number but the deeper I go the more I want to find out!
We have given many of James Polk's letters to Sewanee, UNiv. of the South, founded by James' uncle Leonidas Polk.THe letters relate incidents about life in prison camp and life after the War and about Rattle and Snap. I am aware of his earlier diary and have seen portions of it. I recently discovered he also rode with General Morgan. His photograph was in an album recently sold of the officers captured with Morgan. I am trying to figure out the time line of his capture and the prisons camps as the time with Morgan has not been discussed. We do have pieces of his flag- which apparently he never surrendered.
I have also been trying to trace his life after the war-- I believe he went to Mexico with a number of other officers in an attempt to start anew there. But this period is a blank. Later he returned to Nashville, married Molly Harding and went to Ft. Worth.
I am also trying to find out more about Molly Harding and her father.Everyone was so intermarried going back i nthe early history of Tennessee that is becomes very confusing... I am not a geneologist so I get lost and stories get scrambled.
I would very much like to know about your book and of course we will buy a copy!
What does the UDC do?
Thanks so much for answering and helping!
