hThank you for the very complete summary of what we know about John Delong. Excellent work. Are you just an interested bystander, or are you related to this outfit?

Warning, speculation follows.

My main interest is in which Wertman did she marry? My theory is that is was George Philip, patriarch of the Lynn Twp clan. Surveys on file at the Pennsylvania State Archives show that both Abraham and Mathias Delong were next neighbors to Martin Wertman, youngest son of George Philip. As he aged, the oldest sons took over the land to the east and he may have gone to live with Martin. He almost certainly knew the widow, Catherine Delong. There exists a short self published booklet on the Wertman Family by Larry A Williams. In it, he states that George Philip Wertman married Catherine Weber, daughter of Jacob, but provides no source. The acknowledgements list numerous female Wertmans, no doubt one of which provided the information. Jocob Weber migrated to Berks Co. PA from Ulster Co, NY about the same time as the Delongs. His daughter, Eva married Abraham's probable brother, Peter. Catherine was born in 1719, so may not be Abraham's first wife, or the mother of the older children. I note the money dispute and that she moved to Sunbury with the two youngest, Edward and John.

I have never been able to find Jacob Weber's estate to verify that Catherine Delong was his daughter.

The 1800 Northumberland Co deed that you reference indicates several debts back in Albany and Lynn. It appears John "borrowed" the money left to her grandsons, by Catherine Wertman. The deed is meant to make it right. It seems money difficulties followed him all his life. There is a John Delong in Lynn, who abandoned his family and they tried to have him declared dead. I have never been able to connect to two Johns, as the children do not seem to match. I cannot be sure, but think I have John Lucas Delong in 1830 Union Co, PA as John D Long, age 80-90 deeding land to the county in exchange for future care of a single daughter, who is not named. There are several John Long's over there and I cannot quite sort them out, but this sounds like something he would be involved in. After that, the trail goes cold. Learning about John is interesting, but I would really like to know more about Catherine. I may be decended from her either of two ways, Stroup/Straub (probable) or Wertman (doubtful). Sorry this is about all I have. The Wertman clan of Lynn Twp is extraordinarily difficult to document.
