Hello Ron,

The FreeBMD index is to the BDMs of England and Wales, so I would give it a 100% "good for UK enquiries" rating. That is if you aren't wanting to search the Irish and Scots BDMs as well.

If you go to http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/progress.shtml, you will see the graphs relating to the project's progress. A new upload of data is due out late this month, so I'd wait until then before searching.

It is weakest in the deaths, as the graphs will demonstrate, but is steadily getting stronger in the births and marriages.

When your search yields a possible entry, you can click on the page number reference and see the names of the others on the page (where transcribed), one of which may be the spouse in a marriage record. They are not cross-linked to each other (in that a bride is linked to her particular groom and vice-versa), but when the project is complete, half will be male, half female, (except where spelling variants have also been entered), giving you a fighting chance of confirming the spouse's surname. You can use Census returns, children's birth certificates and the IGI to aid this.

The Project is only focussing on the events from 1837 to the end of 1901. To search later years you will have to stick with the fiche indexes.

As time progresses, keep going back to the site to do searches. (I recommend adding it to your "Favourites" list). You can use wildcards, and there are lots of options for narrowing down your search.

Expensive? No, unless you want to order each and every possible certificate you come across. As the title implies, access to the database is Free. (Except for paying for your ISP and the local telephone call charge to connect!).

Happy hunting.

Cheers,

Heather.
