Hi Jim, Part of my family was "in the Dayton area" in the mid 1800's. My great grandfather, Friedrich Wilhelm Döll and his brother Charles M. Döll arrived in Philadelphia in May 1854. Friedrich stayed in Philadelphia until 1863 - then took the train to Carlisle, Ohio and I believe settled in Blue Ball. But, his younger brother, Charles M. stayed in Philadelphia for only a half year and then moved to Dayton for about 1-1/2 years, to Franklin for a year, to Middletown for 3 years, back to Franklin for 6 or 7 years, and then settled in Middletown on 2/13/1866. So this other Döll family could very well be mine.

Part of the intrigue of genealogy to me is wondering why people went to the places they did. Obviously, Cincinnati was a much more likely place for immigrants to go. Both of these Döll boys were shoemakers but Dayton doesn't stick out as a large market for that trade. Which leads me to my frequent suspicion that there was already someone from the extended family in the area - someone who may have gotten to Dayton by way of Cincinnati. But, since your ancestor arrived after mine, it would sound like there might have already been a predecessor - or that your Jacob followed my Charles.

I want to keep working this Ohio group because in Germany the towns that they came from are really not all that far apart. I'm hoping that eventually we'll be able to tie all these together probably about two generations before our immigrant ancestors.

I'd be interested in any information you have about the other Döll family in the Dayton area. Vicki
