The research shows that two Delisle knights, Count Jean Delisle and Count Robert Delisle, were officers under William of Normandy at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and during the fighting in England after the battle until 1070. The two Delisle knights were from the Castle at Lille in Normandy. One of the Delisle knights was rewarded for his military duty with a royal land grant and title in Yorkshire; the other was given a land title in one of the islands between France and England.
The French and the Normans had a way of describing a surname: Delisle dit Lille = Delisle says Lille {In English we'd probably say Delisle aka Lille.} I've also found, for example, Arrive dit Delisle which means "Arrive" says "Delisle." Strange, and I have now begun to reference it as the "dit system." It's a tad confusing.
Anyway, I have come to the speculation that the Lille [Lilly, Lilley, etc] surname was originally DeLisle [Delisle means from the island]. It most probably got rolling in England in the 10th century.
My own Delisle line goes back to 1580 in Normandy. My direct ancestor, a military man named Louis Delisle, came to French Canada [Quebec]in 1665, and decided to stay. In the 1800's his descendants went south into New England for economic reasons.
I am still researching the Delisle's in Normandy, France, and England. Your Roger Delisle, I believe, was born in Paris. An artist with talent, he wrote the French National Anthem. While his people were originally from Normandy, it is known that he traveled a great deal. I'm still researching him.
The Delisle's of Normandy were one of the four principal families of European cartographers [map makers], and as a matter of fact Nicholas Delisle mapped about half of the USA.
If your ancestors were Delisle dit Lille [Delisle says Lille], they were accurate using either surname.
If I happen on any more data about the Delisle's in England, I'll post another message to you. Good luck on your search. Charles L. McGranaghan, Carson City, Nevada lcmcgranaghan@aol.com
