It is our pleasure to offer this approximately 120-year-old Bible.
The Bible, in fair to good condition, was most likely originally owned by H. Delay and Emma Eagle
Delay, as their wedding at "Upper Tract" in 1882 is recorded on the beautiful marriage certificate in the Bible, along with the names of those present and the minister.
Under marriages are what appears to be Lelia DeLay to George Henry Keiter Jr. and the date, and later yet Richard DeLay Keiter to Nancy Joan Deegan and the date. Note that some of the
family capitalized the "L" in their last name and some apparently did not. At least that's the way they are written here, some up and some down.
The births page lists H. and Emma Delay again, their birth dates, and the names and dates of birth of their children, Mary, Lelia and Freddie; and the lone child, Richard DeLay Keiter, son
of Geroge J. Keiter Jr. and Lelia.
Deaths include, with dates, parents Hamilton Taylor DeLay, Emile Eliza Eagle DeLay, children Mary J. Delay, Freddie Delay, and H. Delay. Also a dog, "Little Bobbie" in 1939, illustrated
with a drawing of
him and a note that he was 12 years old. Also George Keiter Jr., John R. Keiter, son of Richard and Nancy, born and died in same day.
A family Bible like this was consulted daily in many households, carried by pioneers settling in the new wilderness, saved from burning buildings, etc. Time and use were their enemies.
This one is over 1200 pages, 10x12.5" and in fair to good condition. The front cover is attached only by threads and reinforcing tape. The leather cover is scuffed and frayed on the tips.
But heavily embossed and decorated with gilt. The interior is in good to very good condition with many engravings, in fact, over 2500 fine scripture illustrations on steel, wood, and in
colors. Page ends are gold. Also has a spot for family pictures but none are included.
The Bible was published by The National Publishing Co.
So here's a chance to not only touch something your ancestors held, but to own something they
loved. This was a piece of "sacred furniture" to families of old, and it's ready to resume its rightful
place with your family.
