Hon. J. P. DeLaughter Dead in His 45th Year
Splendid Carolina Gentleman Has Been Called to His
Reward
Hon. J.P. DeLaughter Representative to the South Carolina
Legislature from Edgefield County, and one of the most prominent and extensive farmers of that section died at the family residence, located eight miles from Augusta on the Martintown Road in South Carolina, Thursday night at 8 o'clock.
Death followed an extended illness which was not regarded as serious until after an operation was performed upon him at an Augusta Hospital three weeks ago. Following the operation he was removed to his home where he quietly
passed away surrounded by his family. He was in his 45th
year.
Funeral services will be held today at noon at the Sweetwater Baptist Church. The internment will be in the Sweetwater Cemetery.
Owing to his illness, Mr. DeLaughter was forced to miss several sessions of the legislature As a Representative in the House he was well known and held in the highest esteem by all of his colleagues. The last session he attended he successfully passed the bill establishing the McKie Memorial Fund. The purpose is to place a monument in some spot, yet to be selected as a memorial to the well-known South Carolian who lost his life in the Hamburg riot.
Mr. DeLaughter is survived by his wife Mrs. Lillie DeLaughter, three daughters, Misses Fannie, Sallie, and Nellie Delaughter; one son Mr. J. P. DeLaughter, Jr. two
sisters, Mrs. Hardy of Conyers, GA, and Mrs. Jane Adams of North Augusta; three brothers, Messrs. R.S. and A.A.Delaughter of Edgefield, and Mr. T. J. DeLaughter of
Birmingham, AL.
This is the son of James Pickens and Nancy DeLaughter and the grandson of Capt. Absolem DeLaughter of Edgefield County,SC.
