DeLaChaumette family name in our family, too.
My great grandfather, George W. , born June 07, 1862/1863, in either Kentucky or in El Dorado, Gallatin County, IL. At birth, his name was Shumate, on marriage license, the U was crossed out and became Shomate. His obituary reads Shoemate. Not sure who his parents were, have been trying to find out if Hugh Francis Shumate who married Elizabeth J. Abbott, in Gallatin County, IL on December 23, 1854, are his parents, or if in fact, he was born in Kentucky to someone else. Trying to connect him to the huge family tree of DeLaChaumettes.
George W. Shomate married Ruth Savage/Sevedge June 07, 1889, DuBois County, Indiana. George was an Engineer for the Southern RR, now known as the Norfolk and Southern RR. Ruth was the daughter of a Blacksmith from Crawford County, IN, James Dagny/Dabny Savage, born February 11, 1833 in Crawford County, IN. James Savage married Sarah Powell, who was born in Parke County, IN on February 26/27, 1838. Unknown place of marriage.
There are also Shumake and Shoemake, Shewmake, Shomake people out there who are also part of this family. On the Virginia Colonial Tax rolls, I think it was Samuel or Blackely(Blakely) Shumate that signed the name and the way the letter T and the letter E met, it looked like Shumake instead of Shumate.
Sure would appreciate any help I can get to find my proper line of family.
Allied family names: Savage,Sevedge, Powell, Brooks, Harrell, Johnston, Lane, Lovett, Scott, Thomas, Wiggam, Schaefer, Woodward, and others.
Thank you,
Mary
