It's odd how much of your husbands story sounds similar to that of my Great-grandmothers and my Grandmothers. However being the matriarichal side that would end up not being entirely all De La Rosa. I never met my grandfather and don't even know his first name. Whether he married again after leaving my Grandmother and his two sons (one being my dad) I do not know. If he did I guess it would mean I have a much larger extended family than I already do.
As for being able to write spanish, you should try one of several online free translation sites. One of the most popular ones is Altavista http://babelfish.altavista.com
