marrige to Whitney in Mid 1800's VT?

I am trying to find a connection between the Delano and Whitney families in Mid 1800's in VT. My great grandfather was Carleton Delano Whitney and we suspect his middle name was a family name. I have yet to find his birthdate, so perhaps it the family lore is true there might be a link from the other direction that would lead to him. Thanks for your help.
