The question about whether Francis Delaney is French or Irish is an interesting one. The Delaney spelling has not been constant. Members of the family have also used Delany. The generation born around the 1800's considered themselves of French descent. We have thought they were trying to escape the prejudice against Irish people following the mass immigrations of 1840 but perhaps they were correct.
