I have found this discussion of a French/Huguenot connection to the Delaney family interesting. I belong to the National Huguenot Society through my Jacques Cossart ancestor and have just proven my lineage through Jean Brevard, also a proven Huguenot line. I say this to indicate I have no problem with the Delaney family being French, but...
What is our proof? Those coming from Ireland before the Revolutionary War were quite often middle or younger sons of the land owners. The land/inheritance went to the oldest son and America was the source of land for these other sons. By the mid 1700s where I have found my beginning records for this family, it is obvious they were men of business. They aquired land and town lots.
I would like to hear more about the possible French connection. One line of my Delaneys alsways spelled their name DeLaney.
