The actual family spelling is O'Dubhshlaine, which means black Defiance. The family is from County Queen (now Laios) at the foot of the Sleive Bloom Mountains. Earliest recorded was Felix O'Dulany, Bishop of Ossory in the 1200's. They were a clan of note and related to one of the Celtic Kings of Ireland. The name is spelled many different ways, all goes back to Cromwell's crushing of Ireland. All Irish sirnames were spelled phonetically for generations and eventually different branches of the same family spelled the name differently.
