My name is Heather and my great grandmother was adopted in the late 1800's from an Ohio orphanage. Her real last name was DeLancey, but unfortunately the ophanage burnt down and all of the records were lost. She was adopted by the Smith family in West Virginia near the Ohio border. Her first name was Nellie DeLancey Smith and she later married into the Meadows family. I was
given "DeLancey" as a middle name, but I wonder if you have any information that may help me trace my heritage. Through the years I have heard the story that my greatgrandmother was born out of wedlock and that her father was a well to do New Yorker and her mother was some sort of a nurse. If you know of any information that may help me trace my greatgrandmother, I would appreciate it. Her son (Edward Meadows), my grandfather is 82 years old and he has also been trying to trace the name because it was a taboo subject when my greatgrandmother was alive.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you,
Heather Watson
