I came across this website while researching the DeLancey name. I am a member of the recreated Delancey's Brigade which is based in New York and Connecticut (we are affilitated with the group in Canada). According to my information Etienne Delancey emigrated here from France. He was a Hugenot. He built a house which still stands in lower Manhattan (now known as Fraunces Tavern). He had several sons: among whom were Oliver and James. James was the presiding judge in the Zenger Trial which established freedom of the press in America. He was also Lt. Governor of the colony of New York. James had a son named James who was sheriff of Westchester County and who formed the unit known as DeLancey's Refugees during the American Revolution. It was this unit who shot up the Davenport House in present day Yorktown Hts, N.Y. and killed Colonel Christopher Greene (cousin of Gen. Nathaniel Greene) the hero of Fort mercer in N.J. and commander of the 2nd Rhode Island regiment (one of the few black units). Oliver formed DeLancey's Brigade which fought in New York and in the Southern campaign. He became the Paymaster General for the British army and fled to England after the war. Oliver's grandson,William Delancey, was Wellington's Quartermaster General and was killed at the battle of Waterloo. Oliver married Phila Franks, one of the few Jewish women in N.Y. at the time. Oliver also had a nephew named Stephen (James "Jr"'s brother) who built a townhouse in upper Westchester county which still stands today and is used as the North Salem,N.Y. townhall. Stephen stayed loyalist and had to leave the country while his wife and children went rebel or "patriot" and stayed here. Contact me if you want more information.
Jack
