Etienne deLancey is also my husband's ancestor and this is the information that we have.
He was born in the city of Caen, Normandy, France on Oct. 24. 1653 or 1663.(think it was 63)His father was a French nobleman, descending from the Huguenot branch of an ancient and noble French house(Picardy). At the revocation of the Edict of Nates in 1685, (religious persecution) his father, the Seigneur Jacques(James)deLancey was dead. His mother was too aged to flee. She was concealed while young Stephen escaped to Rotterdam in Holland. He remained there for two or three years, finally going to Lndon, England, (1886) where he was denizened a British subject. On the 11th of March 1686 he took out letters patent of denization under the great seal.Shortly afterward sailed for N.Y., arriving on the 7th of June.
He soon amassed a great fortune in merchantile pursuits.
We have more if you are interested. This is information that has passed to us.I am also interested in any further information that you have.
