Several years ago, I asked a question about the DeHART clan. I had wondered if any of them had dropped the "de" and just used the surname as "HART." The answer I received then from several researchers was "NO, the DeHART family is not related to the HARTs." But I think perhaps the answer would have been more accuraltely put if they had said, "We don't know." Now recently in checking through census records for Berks County PA, I found several members of the DeHART clan who, in various US census years, were recorded as HART. Many were recorded with what appeared to be a middle initial 'D'. Here's info about one, Jeremiah DeHART of Berks County PA. I hope someone here can connect to his family, and I also have a question about his wife. Jeremiah DeHART 1821-1885 was one of the younger children of John II DEHART (1776-1874) and Mary HORNER (1778-1859). John II was s/o Johann DEHART (1752-1805) and Elizabeth WEIDNER (1750-1825), also of Berks County, PA. Jeremiah DeHART married Catherine REPPERT on 20 July 1839 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Reading, Berks Co. --Who are Catherine REPPERT's parents? I don't have this Catherine REPPERT in my database! Jeremiah and Catherine DeHART probably lived with his parents for a while. They lived next to John DeHART and Mary in Alsace Township for many years, then between 1860 and 1870 they moved to Exeter Township. 1840 census, Alsace Township: John DHART: 2 males 20-30; one male 60-70; 1 female 5-10; 1 female 15-20; one female 60-70 [this is the only DeHart in Alsace Twp in 1840 census --ej] Their first child, Selina was born in 1840, probably after the census date. In 1850, Jeremiah DeHART family lives next door to John & Mary DeHART: 1850 census, Alsace Township: John DeHART, 73 [b. 1777] Mary, 72 [Mary Horner DeHART... b. 1776] --Next door are: Jeremiah DeHART, 30 [b. 1821] Catherine, 28 [b. 1822] Selina, 10 [b. 1840] Anna E., 8 [b. 1842] Ellen, 5 [b. 1844] Oliver, 3 [b. 1846] William, 2 [b. 1848] 1860 census, Alsace Township, has in family of Jeremiah DeHART and Catherine: **note how the surname was written by the enumerator that year. Jeremiah D HART, 41 Catherine, 40 Ellen, 16 Oliver, 14 William. 12 May, 8 [b. 1852] Elmira, 6 [b. 1854] Ewin, 1 [b. 1859] 1870 census, Exeter Twp --Douglassville PO: Jeremiah DeHART, 51 Catherine, 50 Allmaretta, 16 [aka Elmira] Irwin, Clara, 5 [b. 1865] [Oliver appears in another h/h] Jeremiah and Catherine DeHART's children are: Selina, b. 1840; Anna E., b. 1842; Ellen, b. 1844; Oliver, b. 1846; William, b. 1848; May, b. 1852; Elmira, b. 1854; Ewin, b. 1859; Clara, b. 1865. Oliver appears in later census records of Exeter Township, Berks County, PA. --If anyone can add anything here, it would be good to hear from you. Thanks very much, Liz J Notify Administrator about this message?
