Look for ancestral information and descendants/relatives of Fred (Frederick?) DeGroot, born about 1842 Holland. Family lore has it that this DeGroot family came from Holland and settled initially in Holland, Michigan. Fred was, or became, a master Brick Mason, as did at least one of his sons - John, the only child of Fred that I know about. Hoping to find more.
John DeGroot was born about 1874 in Michigan. By 1900 he is in Sevier Co., AR, living as a boarder in the home of his future wife, Texanna "Annie" Story. They had 1 daughter, stillborn, and 5 sons - Thurman Wilson, John Edwin, Charlie Houston, Ernest Oland, and Oscar William. Thurman was born about 1903 in AR and Oscar William was probably born in McCurtain Co., OK.
It is not known if John's family (father, Fred, and siblings) came to Arkansas with him, but I've been unable to find any siblings so far. I just found a Fred DeGroot, age 68 in 1910 in Sevier Co., AR who is probably the father, but he is widowed and living as a boarder in someone's home. He also matches a Fred DeGroot found in 1900, Butler Co., Missouri, who was also born about 1841-42, but the wife in that year says she's had 5 kids and all 5 are living - and there are 5 in the home. Don't know for sure that this Fred is John's father, but family lore says his name was Fred.
