Further wondering if Ellen (Degraw) Brininstool is related to:
Leah Degraw, wife of Thomas Pike. Children: Murray L. Pike (1836-1908), and John Benjamin Pike (abt 1845 - 1913). Note: Murray L. Pike is the second husband of Ellen (Degraw) Brininstool's daughter, Nancy Ellen.
Hannah Degraw (abt 1820 - 1887), wife of James M. Brininstool. Note: James M. Brininstool is the brother-in-law of Ellen (Degraw) Brininstool.
Might Ellen, Leah and Hannah all be daughters of James and Barbara "Nelly" (Hetsler) Degraw? I'm told that Ellen (Degraw) Brininstool had sisters named Leah and Rebecca. But so far haven't seen a Rebecca listed in the family of James & Nelly Degraw.
Ellen seems to have been born in Canada, while Leah (Degraw) Pike may have been born in Pennsylvania, and Hannah (Degraw) Brininstool in New York. So it's a stretch. However:
Family lore says that Ellen, though born in Canada, lived in Pennsylvania and that her husband George Brininstool courted her from "across the state line" (he being in New York). Can't say if there's any truth to that, but it's intriguing.
Also, the children of Leah (Degraw) Pike were born in Canada.
Meanwhile, James & Nelly Degraw are said to have lived in Monroe County, New York but to have also moved to Canada at one point.
As if all that weren't confusing enough:
Ellen (Degraw) Brininstool's daughter, Nancy Ellen (1847-1929), was first married to Robert Harvey Caswell (1839-abt 1929). His nephew, Judson B. Hughes (1861-1928) was married to Mary E. Degraw, daughter of Christopher Degraw (abt 1843-1913).
Christopher Degraw was the son of Cornelius Degraw (abt 1811-1889). This branch of the Degraw family lived in Elgin County, Ontario, Canada.
What a tangled web. We have a possible first-cousin marriage: Nancy Ellen Brininstool & Murray L. Pike, if their mothers, Ellen (Degraw) Brininstool and Leah (Degraw) Pike, were sisters.
We potentially have sisters who married brothers: Ellen (Degraw) m. George W. Brininstool; Hannah (Degraw) m. James M. Brininstool.
Then there's the question of whether the Elgin County Degraw family (Christopher, his father Cornelius) are related in some way to potential sisters Ellen, Leah and Hannah, or to their potential father, James Degraw.
All very speculative. Maybe even completely wrong. I just can't help but think someone out there has the missing links that I haven't been able to find.
