I've had correspondence (not e-mail) in the last year or so passed along to me that also enquires about this remarkable suggestion. The name "Mewborne" was also mentioned as an alternate spelling as I recall. The enquiry was from a gentleman who was driving in the area of New Bern and reminiscing with a companion (his fiancee, I think he said) about his grandmother who had given him the information you cite years before and he suddenly remembered it. I have tons of poorly sorted hard-copy genealogical information and printouts of computer files. I don't know if I could find the letter to put you in touch with the man. Do you want me to try? He seemed to have no more information than you, but you could compare notes. I'm afraid I dismissed the tale as a bit preposterous, but who knows?
