Jim: I'm not a certified genealogist, but I have had a good deal of experience tracing many lines back to the first American generation;the result often brings information about foreign generations also.
If I were starting all over again, I would look for a genealogical (or historical) society to join where I could learn from experienced researchers and thus avoid many mistakes. Most of my work had been done before the Internet became a factor. Of course now there is much to be gained thru this medium, but I'm old-fashioned and still like to have a book to study.
