Hi Ben & all Byer Ohio/Nebraska Defrances,
Ben, I saw your 2003 message recently. From what I have (mostly from Larry Defrance), your Evelyn Defrance Gardiner is the daughter of Samuel G. Defrance who is a younger brother of Margaret Ellen Defrance. Margaret was called "Ella" and was my mother-in-law's grandmother. My mother-in-law remembers her Aunt Jennie "who had beautiful handwriting" and who came out to California to care for her at one time in the 1930s.
My family and I will be exploring Byer Ohio this summer to look at the old family homestead on Pigeon Creek. I found an 1875 map showing the "S. Defrance" property and residence. "S." is Samuel Wm. Defrance. Samuel G. and Ella and all children of Samuel Wm. and Sarah Thomas Defrance were born and raised there before the family moved on to Nebraska. My mother-in-law remembers visiting Pigeon Creek and a lady named Melissa, about 1933, when she went up there with her mother Vida Young and Ella.
Calling all Ohio/Nebraska Defrances! Anyone have anything to share about the old Byer days such as family sites or stories? Such treasured remembrances will make our short stop there all the more significant.
