Dear Bud,
I need your help badly. Have you ever heard of a Dufort changing their name to Strong? I have been told that the two names translate to each other in French and English. My father-in-law was David Joseph Strong, born on June 10, 1865 in Marshall, Calhoun Cty, MI. His father was said to be Julius Strong and his mother Sally Threehouse. The St. Mary Catholic Church in Marshall, MI reports that their records indicate that Joseph David Dufort was born on June 10, 1865 to Julius Dufort and Marcelline Destroismaisons (Sally Threehouse).

The 1870 US Census shows Julius and Sally living in Marshall, MI as Julius Defore, age 50 and wife Sally. They had several daughters and a son David, age 5.

Sally Threehouse had a brother, Pierre (Peter). Peter married Marie Bougret, daughter of Lewis Bougret and Charlotte Patenaude. Marie's (Mary Electa) death certificate shows her parents names as Lewis Defore and Charlotte Patterson. Mary Electa and Peter had a daughter, Olive. Olive's death certificate shows her parents names as Peter Threehouse and Electus Strong.

One of Mary and Peter's decendants told me that her grandmother had told her that Mary had several sisters and brothers with different names. Some were Defoe/Defore and some were Strong. One was Julius Strong. I'm wondering if my Julius could be the son of Lewis/Louis Bougret dit Dufort and Charlotte Patenaude.

Kelly Townsend's Patenaude Families of North America website shows Louis Bougret-Dufort married to Charlotte Patenaude 7 Jan 1812 in Ste-Famlle, Boucherville, Chambly, Co. QC. It shows one son, Francois-Xavier Bougret, born 19 Aug. 1818 in Longueuil, QC. I have found no record of any other children. I have found records of another Dufort family who settled near Unionville, MI. But there were age differences, so I don't believe they are the same.

I know this whole story sounds crazy. The only record I have found of my Julius and Sally Dufort is in the 1910 US census. At that time Sally Strong was living with her daughter Lydia in Whittemore, MI and was 85 years old. I know not what happened to Julius. Their son David moved his family to California in 1908 where my husband was born. I have no idea when, where or why they changed their name to Strong. I have heard that many French Canadians Americanized their beautiful French names because they were made fun of by the English speaking people.

Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. I know I have left out a lot of details. Please contact me. Gert Strong.
