Hello.I am Rex de Foor(the actual correct spelling of our name).I live in Pelham, AL.The Andrew Defoor you speak of was my grandfather's brother.I know almost all of the people you list here. All are passed away of this date.My grandfather was John T. Defoor.Andrew, Martin and Jim(James) were some of the brothers of his family.Uncle Jim lived with me for a while before he died.He lived at my home here in AL and I eventually carried him back home to GA.He was just miserable being here in AL and as he put it-----away from home.John T. Defoor was married to Addie Mae McCurdy in GA.He and Jim and I think Andrew and Martin came from Villa Rica to Alabama not long after the trun of the centruy to work. They were considered to be expert carpenters and they went to work for a company in Birmingham called Salmon and Cowin..........now known locally as Cowin Equipment Company. They become very well known in the area as experts in the mining indurtry because they could "sink a shaft" for the then fledgling mining industry. They would assist in the digging of the vertical shaft and then shore it up with timbers so the mining could be done. There are not many of us Defoors left here.I spell my name "de Foor" because Daddy John, as we called him, told me that was the original spelling but the folk got kinda lazy in the south and shortened it to "Defoor".There is a church over there in GA, I think in Villa Rica that is called Kelly Harbin church. If memory serves me correctly the original Frenchman who came here, N. J. DEFOOR and I think two of his wives are buried there. If you find his grave, beside him is one of his wives, and Uncle Jim told me that in that grave is not only the wife but one of their children as well. The mother died in child birth and so did the infant and back then it was common practice to bry them together.I am tired of typing but I have some very funy stories regarding our family.I will post more later.
Hope to meet you one day.If anyone needs to call me regarding our family please feel free to call 205-663-2537
