Gallipolis Daily Tribune (OH) - April 6, 2006
Deceased Name: Claremont Deem: 'Real Son' of Civil War soldier dies
(Editor's note: The following was submitted by James Oiler of Thurman, commander of Cadot-Blessing Camp 126 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, based in Gallipolis.)

THURMAN - The recent passing of Claremont Deem of Wood County W.Va., ends another chapter in American history.

Mr. Deem, the last child, "Real Son" of Union Civil War soldier Cpl. John Deem of Company E, 11th West Virginia Infantry, answered his final muster on Jan. 26, 2006.

Claremont was born July 22, 1910, as the 23rd child of Cpl. John Deem, who mustered into the Union Army Aug. 28, 1862, and remained until mustered out June 17, 1865.

John Deem was 69 years old when Claremont was born and lived until 1920. Claremont was 10 years old when his father died. Claremont was a member of the Benjamin Fearing Camp 2 Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, located in Marietta, and is the sister camp to Cadot-Blessing 126 of Gallipolis.

The members of both camps served as honor guards at Mr. Deem's funeral and escorted his remains to the cemetery. They held Civil War military honors with flag folding and musket firing. Claremont was laid to rest beside his father.
