I am searching for an ancestor who was in Sherman's March. My grandmother, Maycel (Welker) Maxwell, had a grandfather or great-grandfather, John Deeds. John spoke with a heavy German accent, was in Shermans' March, and refused to talk about it. I am trying to find out more about this elusive ancestor -- so far it's easier to find my clan Maxwell in the 11th century Scottish highlands, than it is to find this Civil War veteran! Any help would be most appreciated.
He lived in the Coshocton, Ohio, area if I recall correctly.
