Dee in Albert Co, New Brunswick and Ireland?

Searching for ancestors of my great grandfather, John DEE (c1836-1929). He was born in Ireland (where???) and ended up in Albert Mines, Albert County, New Brunswick, Canada. He married Adelaide Rebecca FILLMORE (1856-1928) in 1874. Family legend suggests he spent time as a gold prospector in California, but I have not been able to substantiate this. I beleive his parents were John DEE, sr., and Mary Catherine CONNORS. I have no further info. on this couple, but presume they were Irish. Any ideas for further research? I would like to find out when and why he emigrated from Ireland (potato famine, perhaps?), where his port of entry was, and where he was from in Ireland. Any leads appreciated -- I'm researching from Canada.
