Hi Marjorie!

My great grandparents were John Clark b.abt. 1839 and Melissa Ann Decow b.abt. 1841 in Elgin County. They married March 16, 1862. According to the register her parents were Daniel Decow and Ann.

I viewed the 1861 census and found Daniel Decow and Lucy Ann with their children. At the bottom it listed Melissa Payson, age 20, with a note that she was not a member of the family. My mystery is if she was not a member of the family, then why did she marry the next year and register as a Decow? Was she adopted?

What do you have on your Daniel Decow? He is found in many of the Elgin County surrogate court records.

Where is Gail Complin McAdam's emails that you speak of? I am interested in reading them.

Anxiously,

Melinda (Clark) Brasier
