CLARK, DECKER, OWEN - Brick Wall - Pelase help!!!
Hello,
Can anyone out there please help me to locate the Unknown OWEN parents of these 6 children, all supposedly born in Orange Co., NY? This has been our brick wall for years...
While not 100% certain, we believe the father may have been born in CT., and may have had the name "Jonathan" or "John" Owen. He was supposedly killed by Indians before 1800. There has not been a clue as to who the mother was. We understand their youngest son, Asa A. Owen, was sent to PA to live with related Clark or Decker family upon the death of his father.
We suspect they are the same CT OWEN family who lived in Ulster & Orange Counties in the early 1700-1800s, possibly members of the First Presb. Church of Orange Co, NY(?) Listed here are their known children (there may be more):
1. William OWEN b: 22 Feb 1774; Father of Charles C. Owen, b. 1807, Goshen, Orange Co. NY, m. Elizabeth Clark, d/o Elijah B. Clark and Mary Ann Yerkes, of Damascus, Wayne Co, PA. Charles died in MI or WI before 1870, fathered 9 or 10 children, wife Elizabeth died after 1880 in NB. (They are our direct-line ancestors)
2. Sarah OWEN b: 17 Jul 1776 in NY, father listed as Rev War Vet of Ulster Co (1790 census), m. Townsend Thacker, 8 children
3. Polly OWEN b: 9 Aug 1779
4. Phoebe OWEN b: 2 Apr 1781
5. Joseph OWEN b: 6 Nov 1783
6. Asa A. OWEN b: 15 Feb 1785 in Goshen, Orange Co., NY, d. 3 Oct 1877, Orion, Oakland Co., MI, m. first Lucinda Corwin, d/o Asa Corwin of PA, m. second Martha Travis, Oakland Co., MI
This family has related connections with a Jesse Decker of PA, whose Decker family also lived in NY and NJ and intermarried with the Owen and Clark families. Jesse Decker, Asa A. Owen and Elijah B. Clark (Elizabeth's father) moved from PA to MI in 1830 and bought land in Branson/Brandon, MI, although they did not live there. They all settled in Oakland Co, and Jesse Decker eventually built Deckertown, MI.
Any information provided will be very much appreciated and I thank you for your time!!
Sincerely,
Cynthia Owen-Gaines
