Greetings! Decker is definitely a family name here in the United States, and dates from at least
the 1600s. It probably comes from the Germanic languages and means "roofer" or something
similar. According to some sources, there are similarwords in other European languages. Here in
Kentucky, most of the Deckers are descendants of four brothers who migrated here in the late
1700s to early 1800s from Virginia and are descended from a line that came from the Netherlands
in the 1600s. The first ancestor apparently did not use the surname "Decker" until the British took
possession of "New Netherland" from the Dutch and insisted that everyone have a surname. There
are thousands of other Deckers in the United States who are descendants of other lines.
