de Castro has its origins in Castile Spain when the name was granted to the descendants of a germanic knight who whent there in round 890's to help the remaining christian forces. The town Castrojurez is the original town.
There are two major branches of the family a Christian one and a Jewish (origin) one. The family is also well known in Portugal and supposed descendants from the Spanish (both religions)

When the expulsions occurred in Spain and Portugal a large number of the jewish families fled to Italy and especially round the Leghorne area.

I have some reference to some of the early Spanish families in www.decastro.gen.nz if any help.
