DeCastro Family Genealogy Forum

The family started with a German nobleman that came to the Iberian peninsula in 884 to assist in the war to drive out the invaders. His name was Nuno Belchiedes. It is probable he had ties with the original Visigothic invaders who were of Germanic origin.
Via him the family base was the castle and town of Castrojures or properly Castro Xerez. The first person to call him self deCastro was one Don Rodrigo Fernandez de Castro.
It is said that branches of this family settled in places like Lara, Guzman, Vallamayor the Rioja in Villa de Haro, the Basque conntry Catalonia and Galacia from where some members later settled in Portugal.
At some time a Jewish branch of the family developed and as it is reported that the town/area round castro Xerez had a large Jewish population dating back to Roman times it is possible the Jewish branch originated in this town as well although at present I have no evidence of this.
Hope this is of interest
