Towns of Bruhl in Germany
Below is the response to a query I put on Rootsweb which cannot be found on RW:
The correct spelling is either Brühl or Bruehl.
Unfortunately, there are actually two of them -- more than one town with the same name is a problem often encountered when doing German genealogical research:
The larger Brühl is located in western Germany about 10 miles south of the city of Cologne (in German: Köln) in the northern part of what was until 1945 the Prussian Rhineland or Rhine Province. Following World War II and the break-up of the huge state of Prussia (in German: Preussen), the northern half of the Prussian Rhineland, the Prussian province of Westphalia, and the very small state of Lippe combined to form today's state of North Rhine-Westphalia (in German: Nordrhein-Westfalen), with the city of Düsseldorf in the Rhineland as its capital. This Brühl is a city of about 45,000 people today.
The smaller Brühl is located in southwestern Germany about 10 miles west of the city of Heidelberg in the northern part of what was until 1945 the state (until 1918, Grand Duchy) of Baden, the capital of which was the city of Karlsruhe. Following World War II, the state of Baden, the state of Württemberg (capital: Stuttgart), and the very small Prussian province of Hohenzollern (capital: Sigmaringen) combined to form today's state of Baden-Württemberg, with Stuttgart as its capital. This Brühl is a town of about 14,000 people today
