Mary A. Moses was my great great-grandmother. The 1939 Texas death certificate of her son, John Henry Moses, states that his mother’s maiden name was Deberry. Mary Deberry Moses and her husband Joel Moses appear on the 1860, 1870, and 1880 Ouachita County, Arkansas census. Mary appears in the household of her son-in-law Thomas Burton in the 1900 Ouachita County census. Her date of birth is given as February 1826 and the birth state of both her parents is given as North Carolina.
Joel and Mary appear on the 1850 DeSoto County, Mississippi census. Census records indicate that Mary was born in Tennessee. So far as I can tell, the only Deberry family living in DeSoto County in 1850 was that of Lemuel Samuel Deberry, who I believe was most likely the father of Mary. His family lived in Tennessee before they moved to Mississippi and he and his wife were born in North Carolina. Since Mary was only about 19 years old when she married Joel about 1845, she was most likely still living with her parents immediately prior to her marriage.
I am posting this message in the hope that someone else will have further information about the parentage of Mary A. Deberry and her relationship to Lemuel Samuel Deberry.
