Grace Gilbert versus Grace Fitzmorris
I started researching the Dever/Deaver family line about forty years ago and bought into the early research concerning Richard and Grace Deaver that had been compiled by an early researcher (name unknown). However, it did not take long for me to realize that there was a lack of documentation available on the lineage that was being copied by many who were connecting their family lines back to this couple.
Some very good research has been done by a few researchers with the existing records in America, but no researcher seems to have tried to confirm the parents or the immigration records of Richard and Grace Deaver/Dever concerning the "Lionheart" ship. However this has not kept the information from being copied (for fact) over and over again. Now it is embedded in Ancestry.com where it will continue to be copied as fact. The references given are not even secondary resources, but indeed are a stretch to be call third or fourth sources. This has been a careless mistake on the part of Deaver/Dever researchers. Those coping this error bear the responsibility for it.
I have asked on this forum many times for documention anyone might have that would prove that Richard and Grace Fitzmorris Deaver/Dever came on a ship called "The Lionheart" from Scotland to America. For lo these many years, I have not received any replies to my appeals.
So, for those of you who are using this information on your lineage charts, I appeal to you to do some additional research to either confirm or refute the above information. It pains me to see you copying what you cannot prove.
I believe that the wife of Richard Deaver/Dever was Grace Gilbert, b.1619, Devon, England. She was the daughter of John and Grace Pomeroy Gilbert, of Devon, England.John Gilbert was born, c1580, in Devon; and Grace Pomeroy was born, 1604, Compton Castle, Devon, England. The following references verify the immigration records of Grace and Richard Deaver/Dever: Passenger and Immigration List Index, by P. William Filby: Deaver, Gracena, Maryland 1658, Reference#8510, Pg 132
The Early Settlers in Maryland: an index to Names of Immigrants Compiled from Records of Land Patents, 1633-1680, in the Hall of Records, Annapolis, Maryland,
Gust Skordas, editor, Balitmore Genealogical Publishing Co., 1968, P. 525:Richard Dever,Service 1658;Grace Dever Service 1658 - Wife of Richard.
I have not proven the above information on the Devon line to my satisfaction, so it has not been added to my lineage chart.Until I have documented evidence, I will not include it.
