If you want to know more about Fanning you can purchase from the author a copy of "Col. David Fanning, the Adventures of a Carolina Loyalist" by John Hairr. Averasboro Press, P.O. Box 482, Erwin, NC 28339. It is not clear how long Deaton served with Fanning. It may have been only a brief time. Fanning was himself a "captain" of his own band of loyalists until his men in July, 1781, elected him as a colonel of the loyal militia of Randolph and Chatham counties, an election shortly thereafter ratified by the British army at Wilmington. The loyalists were suspicious of British intentions, however, fearing that they wanted to order the partisans to serve in the army of the King of Great Britain so they could be sent to fight in other parts of the colonies, something most of them did not want to do. The issues that animated men to fight on one side or the other were often local and personal, and there are many cases of men, including Fanning, if I recall correctly, who served at different times on different sides.
