Bill, I just ran across your posting concerning the Bible records found. I wonder if you could tell from whom the letter was sent that you mentioned was addressed to J. S. Deaton. I can tell you that the post mark was most likely Carlton, TX. My mother was born there her mother, Lillie Katherine Deaton Byrd was the daughter of John Seamore (Sherman?) Deaton, a circuit riding Baptist preacher. The reason I use both middle names, the family has seen his middle name both ways. I have that John S. Deaton was the son of Thomas John Deaton and Nancy Moore--in fact after Thomas John was killed at the first Battle of Manassas in 1861, his mother married the uncle of John's wife.
