Hello Patrica -- THANK YOU so much for your posting, you are a God-send! I have spoken with Coreene several times, she is a wonderful person & I, too, love her stories. My Cherokee line comes through both my paternal gfather (DAVIS) line & my paternal gmother's line (FISH, FOREMAN). Now, Coreene's story to me states that Capt. Nathaniel FISH (my 2ggfather) traveled the Trail of Tears, knew Isaac DAVIS & they were very good friends. Isaac DAVIS was reportedly a Cherokee Chief & "well respected among his people", dying shortly after reaching Tahlequah Territory, having been foreably removed also. His wife, name unk, was either killed prior to leaving or died en route. Until I learn the Cherokee name of Isaac DAVIS I cannot identify him on any Cherokee roll or military roster so that is pretty much the extent of my knowledge of the Cherokee attachment of Isaac DAVIS. According to Coreene, Isaac is buried in a cemetery to the west of present-day Tahlequah. I have phoned the Cherokee Nation Headquarters, in Tahlequah, & they stated that they did not have a listing for Isaac DAVIS. Following is my note that I made during my 13 Feb 1998 telephone conversation with Coreene. I hope it helps. Please contact me at fava@budsters.com . It is GREAT hearing from you & I hope to hear from you soon!Your Cuz... Bonnie 2/13/1998 -- Phone conversation with Correne DEATHERAGE, states Nathaniel FISH & Isaac DAVIS went on the Trail of Tears together. They started out from the same place in Tennessee, down by the Georgia corner, & ended up together in Tahlequah. Nathaniel FISH was Captain over the Cherokees on the Trail of Tears. After Isaac DAVIS died, Capt. FISH took her dad & other members of the family out & showed them where Isaac DAVIS was buried in cemetery, west of Tahlequah. Doesn't think Grandpa DAVIS lived too long after he got to Tahlequah. Thinks the wife of Isaac DAVIS was killed before they left Tennessee or on the Trail. Says her father took her to the cemetery when she was little & her father told her where the grave was but there was no name to the cemetery & she doesn't know what it is called now. States was a large monument with names on it but she did not find the names of Isaac DAVIS or his wife on it. The caretaker was looking for people who knew who was buried there but she never got ahold of him to give him the name. Her Mom & Dad buried in Burkhart Cemetery, Racine, Missouri. States her father referred to Martha DAVIS as "Pansey" Can get Cherokee information from Muskogee.
