If Elizabeth Rogers stayed true to the Deatherage/Rogers habit of switching first and middle names around depending on the mood of the day, the 'N' that appears on Martha's death record could stand for just about any female name starting with a 'N' and be her middle name.

Her given name was Elizabeth in court records in Morgan Co IL, she's listed as Elizabeth on the Shannon Co MO 1850 and additional census records...but that does not mean she may not have had a middle name of 'Nancy' or another middle name beggining with an 'N'. The death record also states that Martha's mother was born Virginia. This is an incorrect entry by informant. Nancy Mason was born in Virginia, daughter Elizabeth Rogers was born more than likely in Ripley Co Missouri.

After the Black Hawk War a handful of the buddies headed to Missouri (James' father, Alfred Deatherage, Thomas Coleman Rogers, and I beieve also Alfred's brother, Milton Deatherage). They had came to Illinois from Kentucky (the Simpson, Logan, Warren counties area) and while most stayed in the Morgan Co Il area, these set out for Missouri.

Martha's death record also states father James Deatherage was born TN too. Which I believe to be inaccurate also.

The thing with death records, which of course are given by an informant at the time of death, is just that. I have viewed death era type 'records' (obits, tombstones and death records) listed different things all on the same person in more than more incident...while the death record documents the deceased death, not does not automatically 'document' with accuracy other information given on the record.

You'll notice the death record gives Martha's birth as 14 Aug 1849, yet Martha does not appear in the household of James and Elizabeth on the 1850 census which is listed as being taken 23 Aug 1850, a year after Martha's birth. Mentioned as an example of how a 'record' , in this case a secondary one being the census, does not indicate accuracy. You'll find Elizabeth Deatherage on with James (listed as Francis Deatherage, District 92 Shannon CO MO image 4 of 29 house/houldhold 28/28) . You'll find though Nancy (Mason) Rogers on the 1850 census as born abt 1808 VA (District 93 Shannon CO MO , image 2 of 29, house/household 14/14 listed on 16 Aug 1850).

You could look for a filmed obit for Martha (Deatherage) Smith for comparison of what it says compared to what death record states, but again, an obit is prepared by family members at the time of deceased person's death and may or may not have been perapred by same person giving death record information and may or may not contain identical information.

Nancy very well could have been Elizabeth Roger's middle name. It was her mother's name and 'Elizabeth' was Thomas Coleman Rogers' mother's name...it was quite common to name female children after the grandmas. Martha Deatherage herself was likely named after her grandmother, Martha Keathley.

If you visit MAGA ( http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ilmaga/morgan/cemetery/rogers.htm ) you'll see the replacement stone for Thomas Coleman Rogers parents. If you'll look at Fountain Rogers stone in that cemetery you'll see what Fountain's original stone looks like today (he also has a replacement but his original still exist though in every rough shape). Rogers Cemetery is named for Thomas Rogers parents. If you use MAGA you'll find links to be able to pull up Thomas Coleman Rogers Black Hawk War service records through the IL State Archives (or just google the Archives).

(**if link above does not work, it can be typed in or just google Morgan Area Genealogy)
