Following isa letter I wrote to Rhonda Deatherage, but I decided to post it here, too, in case some of the folks who use this forum may be able to help us. Well, we have been working on our family history challenges again and I think we have come across something you can help us with again. To explain in a big nutshell and then more detail… My Aunt Ida Derryberry Smith, married Thomas Leonidas Smith in 1909. I have the Derryberry side well researched with supporting documentation, pictures, anecdotes, maps, yah dah. Now, I’ve progressed on to the Smith and associated lines. Uncle Tom’s parents were Hiram Thomas Smith born 1847 Jackson Co, Tenn, d 1919 Shannon Co, MO. Hiram married in 1873 in MO to Martha Katherine “Mouse”Rogers. She was b. 14 Aug 1849, Eminence, Shannon, MO, d. 24 June 1934 Hartshorn, Texas, MO. She was also married to Milton George, I have the children by both men. She d. from cancer of the intestines. Aunt Ida took care of her when she got in bad health until she died. This info so far came from Martha and Hiram’s death certificates, census and a little book “Smith NC-TN-MO”compiled by Jessye Ann High. Then I started reading and searching further on the internet of course going to the Deatherage Genforum. There I learned Martha “Mouse”had yet another husband, her first, Jeremiah Orchard. We found on the internet either ancestry or rootsweb, that he was born 1825 Hart Co, KY, parents James Orchard and Elizabeth Dawson and have followed up with further information on those folks. We know from census Jeremiah was sheriff and asst marshall enumerating the census in Shannon Co, MO. The census lists a James F. Orchard born 1849 Shannon Co, Mo with them and we assumed this to be the child of Jeremiah and Martha. I question this because of the good sources we have supporting Martha being born in 1849. What we don’t know and are having trouble finding are more particulars on Jeremiah. Did he die young (but not too young, because he purchased land in Shannon Co in 1859) there in the Shannon Co area, or what? When and where were Jeremiah and Martha married? Maybe it was recorded in Book A marriage records in Shannon Co which was destroyed by fire? Don’t know. Finally, piece of information on the 1850 census Shannon Co, Mo entry for Martha hit me. She is listed as being 23 years old and being born in KY. This is not right for our Martha. I think there may have been two Martha’s or something strange is going on. I can’t find her on the 1860 census, missed her somehow. But on the 1870 census, Current River Twp, Shannon Co, MO, she appears with her current husband Milton George. She is listed as age 20 which would put her being born ca 1850. No child was listed with them. On the 1880 census, Jackson Twp, Shannon Co, MO, Martha is listed with her current husband Hiram Smith, their children Iona L., Wm A., Alex C., and Hiram’s stepson Martha’s son James F. George, 9 years old at the time. Martha is listed as 29 years old, which would put her born ca 1850. On the 1900 census, Jackson Twp, Shannon Co, MO, Hiram Smith is listed with his wife Martha and children Wm. A., Alex C., Dela E. Martha is listed as born in 1849. Then on the 1910 census, Shannon Co, MO Hiram Smith is listed with his wife Martha and children Marion, Allen and Ellen. Martha was listed as being 60 years old, which would put her born in 1850. Hiram Smith died 6 Aug 1919, of typhoid fever in Shannon Co, MO at home, he is buried at Smith Cemetery, Lewis Holler, Shannon Co. I can’t find Martha on the 1920 census, but according to family information she lived with first one of her children, then another. On the 1930 census St. Louis City, MO 15 prect. Martha is listed with her son William’s family. Her age is listed as 80 which would put her being born in 1850. In 1934 Martha died in the home of her daughter-in-law Ida Belle Smith (my Aunt Ida). I have a copy of her death certificate. It says: Martha Katherine Smith, born 14 Aug 1849, Eminence, Shannon, MO, father Jas. Deatherage (I don’t know where that came from unless Frank Deatherage’s name was really something like James Frank or James Francis, and Aunt Ida didn’t know anything about the Rogers connection.), mother N. Rogers, married H. R. Smith, died 24 June 1934 of cancer of the intestines. (I hope Aunt Ida had something strong to give her for the pain.) She was buried at Smith Cemetery, Lewis Holler, Shannon Co. By the way something interesting about Lewis Holler…it is right on the northern edge of what is now known as The Sunklands, it is an official conservation area. It is filled with interesting geological phenomena, large sinkholes, uncollapsed caves, springs, creeks running into the ground and disappearing, outcroppings of unusual rocks and formations. Of course, a lot of history has been lived in that area and it is ripe with stories and legends. Maybe you’ve come across something in your research that can help us figure out what is going on with these folks to this point, I hope so. Looking more closely at Thomas Coleman Rogers and Elizabeth Nancy Mason, we can’t help but wonder if there may not be two Nancy’s that may be causing confusion regarding this part of the family. We know Thomas Coleman Rogers md Nancy Mason, some say the record reads Elizabeth Nancy Mason (I don’t know, I haven’t seen the record.) in 1822 Logan Co, KY. Thomas C. Rogers and family appear on the 1830 census, Morgan Co, Ill—there is 1 boy under 5 y/o, 1 man 20-30 y/o, 1 girl under 5 y/o and 1 woman 20-30 y/o. In 1830, if a person was 20-30 y/o, he or she would have been born 1800-1810. We know Thomas was born 1809 in Kentucky. But what about the woman on this census? Has anyone sent for a copy of Thomas C’s Black Hawk War military and pension papers? They may have information that would help with all this. Thomas C. Rogers appears on the 1840 census of Ripley Co, MO, listed is: 1 boy 5-10 y/o, 1 boy 10-15 y/o, 1 man 30-40 y/o, 1 girl under 5, 1 girl 5-10 y/o, 2 girls 10-15 y/o and 1 woman 30-40 y/o. Elizabeth Nancy Mason was reputedly married to Thomas C. Rogers, Ozias George and Frank Deatherage. Thomas C. died bef being enumerated for the 1850 census, but reason and perhaps probate papers, tells us the family was in Shannon Co, MO. On the 1850 census Shannon Co, is a Nancy Rogers, 42, born VA, this age would put her being born ca 1808. Listed with her are children Derias, male, 19, born Ill; Marcia, 10, born MO and Richard, 5, born MO. This Nancy could fit the place of Thomas C’s wife when looking at the birth years of his wife reported on the 1830 and 1840 census. Now, the Elizabeth Nancy we know as Martha Katherine’s mother, married Frank/Francis Deatherage, appears on 1850 census with Elizabeth age 16, born ca 1834, married Ozias D. George in 1853 Shannon Co, MO. He died 18 June1876 Shannon Co, MO. I haven’t seen his probate papers, but will be getting them. Leah Pearson, in her Genforum post, says Ozias George married Nancy Rogers in 1853, no source listed. We haven’t found Ozias and Ellizabeth Nancy family on 1860 census. On the 1870 census Current River Twp, Shannon Co, MO is listed Ozias George, 40, farmer, b TN, Elizabeth, 37 (making her born ca 1833) born MO; Nancy, 16, born MO. Martha would have been 21 y/o at the time, so she was probably already out of her parents house. Ozias died in 1876 and Elizabeth Nancy married John McPheeny. On 1880 census, Jasper Twp, Shannon Co, MO is the John McPheeney family. Elizabeth is listed as 45 y/o (born ca 1835) in MO with children Susan George, Sarah E. George, and James George. The differences I see between the 2 Nancy’s is the wife of Thomas C. Rogers was born ca 1808 in VA and the Elizabeth Nancy we know as Martha’s mother was born 1834 in MO. I wonder if you would have any sources or information to help sort out these women. In one of your posts you mention that Elizabeth George or Martha Orchard did not sign off on the probate. Could it be that they didn’t because they weren’t the heirs? I don’t know, most of this is documented, then a little part of it isn’t and I just hope we can untangle it, let me know what you think, please. Oh, when I refer to “we”, that includes my friend Susan Gilbert. We are working together on this since she has so many connections there in Shannon Co, too. Notify Administrator about this message?
