Many states require that funds, say in an old checking account, which lie dormant for 7-10 years must be turned over to the state. The state in turn, by law, must attempt to find the rightful owner (or heirs) and return accordingly. For example, some 30 years ago I did a short stint taking kids pictures in K-Marts. After I quit, there was $40 in commissions that I didn't realize I had coming. Since I moved and the company couldn't find me, after 7 years they turned this money over to the state. In the days before the internet, every March, Texas would publish a list of names of people with unclaimed funds in the newspapers. Now with the internet, some of them have on-line searches - the kikker being that not necessarially all names will be listed on-line - Texas may or may not list amounts under $50 where Ohio apparently lists any amt... I think it's Kentucky that also has a monthly "treasure hunt". The state becomes owner of various assundry stuff, say through lingering probates or whatever...this month they have a very beautiful and old pocket watch...if you can prove ownership or that it belonged to your direct ancestor, you become the owner... Anywho, last March I had heard about the Texas search but just recently realized that other states had info on the net as well. Guess it's always fun looking for buried treasure - and Ohio turned up 2 names in my wife's line of people we didn't realize existed - one of them may lead to quite a genealogical treasure so to speak! (here's hoping) So, whatever the case, have fun... patrick.
