I have been researching my Gr Grandfather's family in Patrick County, Virginia from the time of the Civil War onward. He is Mathew Henry Deatherage, son of William and Elizabeth A. (Pickel) Deatherage. His 2 brothers died in the War and 3 of his sisters married and raised families in Patrick County afterwards. Mathew went to Missouri after the war and lived out his life there. At the time of the 1860 census, the family was living in the Dan River District of Patrick County, Va (near the town of Ararat). The census lists the family as follows : Name Age Notes William * 54 Farmer, born in Stokes Co, NC Elizabeth A 53 Maiden name, Pickell Hester Catherine 21** AKA 'Kate' or 'Aunt Kate' later Ruth J 19 No further record after 1880 Mathew Henry 17 50th Va Inf / 8th Va Cav Sampson H 16 50th Va Inf / KIA 09/13/1962 Mary Victoria 14 Married Richard D. Hendricks John G 12 8th Va Cav; died in POW camp Minerva A 9 Amna Avoy who married A.J. Scales * There is another William (a cousin) in Patrick Co at this time but he is always shown as 'William A.' Deatherage in census records and official docs. ** Kate (Hester Catherine) is identified in census records from 1850 through 1910 but, she seemed to fudge on her age as time went on; as best I can tell, she was born in 1834 so, for this 1860 census her correct age should have been 26 ('sorry Aunt Kate). Any way, I have been able to follow Kate through census records and property deeds all the way up until 1921 when she deeded her remaining property near Ararat, Va to her neice, Myrtle F. (Hendricks) Poore; after that I can find nothing else about her - including her grave. I have found Myrtle's grave but, not Kate's. One other odd thing is that, although the 1921 deed is filed at the Patrick Co. court house and Myrtle Poore is shown on the 1920 cesus, Kate is not shown on the census. Perhaps she is living in another county or State (NC ?) in 1920 but, I'm having no luck finding her. If anybody knows what happened to Aunt Kate, please let me know. Thanx.
