Hello Scott & all --

I am quite familiar with Guy & Marie Gould DEATHERAGE's genealogical works. I have started a great deal of my data base from their work, followed up by individual research. People who have done a lot of research in the quest of their family history have my utmost respect & admiration. This is an extremely time-consuming, mind involving pursuit that entails more than reading a book of extracted land records or copied marriage lists. Guy & Marie have done an excellent job.

Here comes the BUT... PLEASE be careful when accepting anyone else's findings. As I stated earlier, they have done an excellent job, however, if you go through & check information that is listed in more than one place, especially toward the end of the compilation, you will find discrepencies. They have been excellent in listing documentation, giving you place, volume/book, page numbers, but there are instances where information differs from one place to the other.

With regard to the statement of name origin you quote, which is found within the first few pages of their work, this is NOT documented. It has widely accepted but the actual records have eluded discovery. Personally, I do not know when or where this concept began. I can not, & do not, say that it is untrue, I only state that it contains no facts which have been inequivicably proven. Quite a few DEATHERAGE family members have sought these elusive records, to no avail.

Be careful in accepting too much "he-said-she-said" genealogy. Pretty soon your data base becomes one shared mis-statement after another. Use shared genealogy as a starting point & research from there. Build on the work of others. I urge all to document your records so you will remember where the particular information came from in 5 years or even 50 years!

Thank you for pointing out some wonderful food for thought... A challenge for every DEATHERAGE family member to seek our noble heritage.
